Show Me Your Number

Boxers are always told by the trainers and fans to ‘put your guards up’ to avoid punches that may lead to one being knocked out. On the other side, the fans yell at the top of their voices to the boxers saying “DON’T PUT YOUR GAURDS DOWN”. We have used this analogy about “guards” to name the project “DON’T PUT YOUR GUARDS DOWN” because in our efforts to end HIV, TB and STIs by 2023 we need to ensure that no one let their guards down.

DON’T PUT YOUR GUARDS DOWN

Boxers are always told by the trainers and fans to ‘put your guards up’ to avoid punches that may lead to one being knocked out. On the other side, the fans yell at the top of their voices to the boxers saying “DON’T PUT YOUR GAURDS DOWN”. We have used this analogy about “guards” to name the project “DON’T PUT YOUR GUARDS DOWN” because in our efforts to end HIV, TB and STIs by 2023 we need to ensure that no one let their guards down. Whether you are HIV, TB and STI positive, you need to know that science has advanced with medicines to provide you another opportunity to live a healthy life. Most important, this concept of not letting your guards down speak to those who are HIV, TB and STI negative to do all they have to protect themselves by not getting infected whilst at the same time the message is sent to those who are positive to stick to their treatment so that they can live longer and healthy. When the two approaches work in tandem, we ALL triumph, we defeat HIV, TB and STIs.

Sports for health is a ground-breaking initiative spearheaded by Show Me Your Number (SMYN) as part of contributing to the aims and objectives of the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) Civil Society Forum (SANAC CSF) as outlined in the National Strategic Plan on HIV, TB and STIs 2023 – 2028. Using sport for health means engaging and partnering with bodies like Boxing South Africa (BSA) and others in sport to make giant strides to serve society and humanity globally. These partnerships are enhanced by the strategic and technical support provided by institutions line UNAIDS that use their global mandate to ensure that the world move with speed to end pandemics like HIV, TB and STIs amongst others. In terms of DON’T PUT YOUR GUARDS DOWN project, the Joint Unted Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) in South Africa has facilitated the engagement between Boxing South Africa and Show Me Your Number on behalf of the Sport, Arts & Culture Sector to collectively come up with a project that aims to harness the power of boxing as a vehicle for promoting holistic health and empowerment with a particular focus on addressing HIV awareness, psychological support and economic empowerment.
