Show Me Your Number Signs MOU to form Strategic Partnership with Boxing
South Africa and UNAIDS to Fight HIV and Other Diseases

Show Me Your Number HIV Prevention Project NPC (SMYN) is excited to announce the formalization of a partnership with Boxing South Africa through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This collaboration represents a significant step forward in the joint efforts towards achieving the goals outlined in the National Strategic Plan on HIV, TB, and STIs 2023-2028 to combat HIV, tuberculosis (TB), and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The MOU was signed at Boxing South Africa’s headquarters in Hatfield, Pretoria, with the presence of both Acting Chief Executive Officer (ACEO) Mandla Ntlanganiso and SMYN Executive Director Mabalane Mfundisi.

The initiative, titled “Don’t Let Your Guard Down,” will engage both the boxing community and the public at large, working toward the elimination of HIV and other prevalent diseases. This partnership, backed by the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) Civil Society Forum and UNAIDS, is set to leverage the influence of sport to raise awareness, promote prevention, and provide education about HIV across South Africa.

Mabalane Mfundisi, Executive Director of Show Me Your Number, expressed his strong support for the partnership, highlighting the essential role that sport plays in connecting with different segments of society by stating “to win against HIV by 2030 requires a prevention revolution greater than any revolution that has been waged before. It means we must get out of our comfort zones and get to work with great speed. Sport, arts & culture are platforms that ensure deeper and engaged connection with youth, with women, with men and the rest of society. Our partnership as Show Me Your Number with Boxing South Africa, propelled by SANAC Civil Society Forum, SANAC Trust and UNAIDS will ensure that we put our best foot forward through using sport as a tool for change. Our partnership with government Departments like Sport, Arts & Culture, Health and Women, Children & Persons with Disabilities will stand us in good stead to make giant leaps in our efforts to make South Africa and the world to triumph against HIV and AIDS.”

The “Don’t Let Your Guard Down” initiative will not only raise awareness but also offer critical mental health support to those involved in boxing. Furthermore, this partnership aligns with Boxing South Africa’s commitment to empowering former boxers by providing them with training in healthcare, enhancing their employability, counselling, and media advocacy, ultimately promoting their leadership within their communities.

The collaboration between SMYN and Boxing South Africa is a major advancement towards the goals outlined in the National Strategic Plan on HIV, TB, and STIs 2023-2028. It highlights the important role of sport as a catalyst for social change and public health improvement. SMYN is proud to have this initiative on board and looks forward to a fruitful partnership through the SANAC CSF with Boxing SA and UNAIDS.
